Can you guess?
These are D.C.’s new Metro cars, of course (the 6000 line, I believe). I’m sure others have already ridden on them, but they’re relatively rare on the Red Line, which I use most frequently, and I’d not seen one in person until my ride home yesterday evening.
Designed to squeeze more passengers in during Rush Hour, some of the highlights include more bench seating in the center of the cars, retractable handles for those surfing commuters, and cushioned benches in the cars’ corners for your leaning comfort.
Incidentally, I found the plaque for last week’s “My D.C.” entry. The title of the work is “Stack of Men” (1990) and the sculptor is Thomas Mullany.
Snazzy!
I really like the ‘leaning corners’ – wish the T had that!
Comment by Jenn 01.18.08 @ 10:24 amNice pics! I especially like the handles in a row – and the complete disuse of said handles. Granted, the train isn’t packed, but still, I’m willing to bet that Metro riders are confused: the short ccan’t reach ’em, and the tall knock their heads on ’em.
Comment by Rudi 01.18.08 @ 10:46 amThe handles are terrific and those cushions for leaning on genious! I wonder if they will implement the same in NY–I don’t live there anymore, but it would be a nice addition.
Comment by isela 01.18.08 @ 11:43 amI haven’t seen any of them on the Blue line yet. They look nice. At least they’re still clean.
