For my friends in the north, I offer this report of what came home with me from this morning’s farmers’ market:
- Strawberries
- Rhubarb
- Pea shoots
- Lettuce
- Kohlrabi
- Cucumbers
- Spring onions
- Blueberry scones
- Mascarpone
- A tomato plant
- A peony
Having fresh, local strawberries in May may be one of the few redeeming properties of living in the south.
ETA: Rudi just ran back to the market to supplement and came home with ramps and broccoli rabe. Yum!
I’m officially jealous. I purchased a share in a local organic CSA this year, but it doesn’t start until late June.
Comment by Amy 05.06.07 @ 10:34 amDC’s the south? Maybe technically… 🙂
You know I’m just kidding. We have rhubarb up here, but no strawberries yet, otherwise, there would most certainly be a pie in my oven right now!
Comment by Jennie 05.06.07 @ 10:49 amWell as far as this New Yawka is concerned, DC is the south. For sure. 😉
I haven’t been to my CSA farmstand yet – this is the first weekend the stand is open but the CSA doesn’t officially start until Memorial Day and I won’t be able to go until next week for a non-CSA fix. My mouth is officially watering for ASPARAGUS… and reading that you picked up rhubarb has made me a bit jealous as well. Mmmm.
(I’m jealous of the Broccoli Rabe too but the strawberries? Not so much…) 😉
Comment by ejbro 05.06.07 @ 12:47 pmLucky! My town’s famers’ market starts at the end of June, and I cannot wait. There’s a guy there w/ THE best produce I have ever seen – I think he’s in league w/ Satan 😉
And the guy w/ local, homemade goat cheese. *drool*
SUMMER!
