Ten current or upcoming movies I’m excited to see:
- The Queen
- History Boys
- Catch and Release
- Night at the Museum
- Because I Said So
- Music and Lyrics
- Stomp the Yard
- Live and Become
- Freedom Writers
- Bobby
Anybody seen any of these yet? Or have anything else they’d recommend seeing?
Seen only 2 on your list. “Bobby” was decent enough, but no home run. It *did* do a nice job of making you feel the loss of Bobby Kennedy, tho — and it’s inspiring, too, (if a little depressing) to think that there was once a time in our country’s history when politics inspired the masses in powerful ways.
“The Queen” is the most overpraised movie I’ve ever encountered. Mirren’s performance is fine, but the film’s production values and script are barely at HBO original movie level (does Tony Blair *really* spend all day describing to the people in his office how British government works? please). There’s also not much of a story to tell, frankly — the period of time between Diana’s death and the Queen’s public, televised reaction to it is *so* minor. Unless you’re a royal watcher, in which case (a) I feel sorry for you, and (b) you’ll drool over the details! Never been more disappointed in a highly acclaimed movie. *Ever.* The idea that it could get nominated for a screenplay Oscar is almost offensive.

My MIL saw Freedom Writers as someone from her school was involved in making it, or related to the screenplay writer or something, and she had nothing but praise for it.
Comment by Jenn 01.23.07 @ 7:21 amLooks like a fine list. I haven’t seen any of them so I can’t really add my two cents. Except to say this: whatever you do, do NOT see blood diamond. Torturously bad.
Comment by Kbee 01.23.07 @ 11:40 amRe: Night at the Museum – I have heard people enjoy this movie who are die-hard “I hate Ben Stiller” sorts. So, if you aren’t put off by Ben Stiller in the first place, it’s probably even more enjoyable.
We saw The Queen. I went in knowing nothing about it and with no expectations. If anyone had told me what it was beforehand, I might not have expressed any interest at all; despite that, I didn’t leave the theater wanting those hours of my life back. I wouldn’t want to see it again, but it was entertaining to sit through once. It had some very funny bits.
Haven’t heard anything about or even seen trailers for Catch and Release but it has Jennifer Garner in it, so that’s a good start.
