it’s a good thing i have rudi

If left to my own devices for the night, I will seriously consider chocolate chip cookie dough for dinner, will rule it out because softening butter takes too much time, and will settle on Lipton’s chicken soup and an ice cream sundae.

Luckily, Rudi does not often leave me to fend for myself for dinner — possibly for this very reason. He actually enjoys cooking and, for reasons unfathomable to me, finds it relaxing. So I eat tasty gourmet food on a regular basis and nutritionally sound almost always.

On a bright note, despite my nutritionally questionable dinner, I did put a dent in the shredding portion of the housecleaning. Shredding is a large portion of the cleaning Rudi and I have to do, because we only do it once or twice a year. And junk mail accumulates with surprising rapidity. (Rapidity is a nice word. Go ahead, say it aloud. It has an onomonopoetic pop to it, don’t you think?)

You know, I’m the same way – if I have to fix my owwn dinner, I end up usually having cereal and cookies. Sometimes, but not often, the cookies end up in the cereal. Sadly, Dh usually puts the kibosh on that, even if he’s not going to be around for dinner himself.

Which is bth good, and bad. Good, as cookies are not a good dinner, but also bad, as when I was little I imagined adults being able to have whatever they want for dinner, and that is not so, apparently! ;P

If softening butter is keeping you from having a dinner of cookies, perhaps I shouldn’t tell you that Janice hates that part and discovered that if you melt the butter in the microwave instead of painstakingly mashing it by hand, there isn’t much noticable difference.

Some cooking purists might be horrified, and could explain some chemical reaction that is modified by using melted butter, but I’ve been melting it for years now and everyone still loves my cookies. Mostly because my trick of adding 2x the recommended amount of chocolate chips is much more important than the butter’s contribution.

David and I both have shredders under our desks, so when junk mail is opened, it goes right in. David gets considerably more mail than I do, and when I had friends over for role playing games, he would hide out in his office and eventually we would hear the sounds of the shredder going off. It got so we were dissapointed if we got through a session without hearing it. Kind of a tradition.

The Meow calendars have shipped. I met with a friend who no longer works here but still is on the list to get a check from her this weekend. We met at a tapas bar for brunch. After brunch I went to Barnes & Noble and bought the rest of the Artemis Fowl books. I guess it’s too late to be called Summer Reading any more, but with San Diego’s weather, it’s easy to lose track of seasons, and I’m still in a state of being thirsty for more literature input. I’ve got all these treasures that were hiding in the kids’ section to catch up on.

Grey Kitten – I think we were separated at birth! I _always_ melt my butter, and always add way more chips than the recipe wants. And have never had a complaint!

I not only add more, I mix both milk chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate. That comes from getting Mrs. Fields cookies at the mall and having to choose which type of chip, or get a cookie with both.

Now I just buy a bag of each, make batter as per the recipe for one bag, and put both bags in!

Milk chocolate AND semi-sweet – oohh, now that is an idea I must try!
