fall comes to dc
posted by soe 5:12 am

This past week, I’ve really seen the foliage around town start to change. Here are just a few of the trees in my neighborhood:

Japanese Maple

Multi-colored Tree

Metro Foliage

Ginkgos

Yellow

Sun against Leaves

Sun through Leaves

Change

Sunny Fall Day

I used to believe in the myth that only New England had stunning fall foliage. And I once said to you, “The change is perhaps more subtle in D.C.” And you said, “There’s nothing subtle about it!”

I see you were right. Nothing subtle about those reds!

Wow!!

Meanwhile, up here every leaf has fallen! And mostly raked. But not entirely!

@jenn: Yeah, I don’t think ours will be all gone until the end of the month, although they are falling at a good clip now.

@Karen: The pink-like reds of the sugar maples are still my favorite and D.C. is definitely lacking those in any quantity. My neighborhood has more Japanese maples than average, which does help give us some of these vibrant reds. But we are a more yellow-rich foliage city than red overall.
