heaviness, harvest, and happily ever after

Two long busy days at the office leave me ready for the weekend. But first, it’s time to share three beautiful things from the last week:

1. The kitten lies on my lap with his head resting on my arm. As we drive home, I pet his head and can feel him get heavy in the same way a baby does when it falls asleep.

2. Sarah, John, Rudi, and I head out to a pick-your-own farm to celebrate Labor Day and the coming of fall. Rudi and I come home with a heap of apples and 11 pounds of tomatoes, most of which are currently in the oven turning into sauce.

3. Amani and Marcus have seemed like such a good couple since they started dating at our annual conference four years ago. And on Sunday night, they looked so … content … to solemnize their relationship and to finally begin their life together.

What’s been beautiful in your world this week?

Your poor kitty! At the risk of sounding negative, my guess is that the mother cat was dumped off, and she and her kittens were fending for themselves when you found this one. We have seen this story over and over again all summer at our shelter, and it is heartbreaking.

I’m not sure what is up with the shelter policy; but I think shelters generally are trying to dissuade people from surrendering cats as they are all overflowing. I don’t think it’s impossible to introduce the kitten to your other cats, but if you wanted to keep him, it’s going to take time and a little patience. There are lots of wonderful articles on the web about how to go about that, and even though it’s upsetting at first to us, the cats do work it out. When we brought the girls home from their shelters, one week apart, our Tim was outraged and didn’t come downstairs for six weeks. But he is unusual; eventually they accept that the other cat isn’t going away and they make peace with each other. Tim forgot that when he came home as a kitten, his older brother bopped him on the head with a paw to let him know who was in charge!

So…I wish you luck in finding the kitten a new home, or keeping him, whichever you decide. Perhaps one of the shelters would do a courtesy listing for you on petfinder.org so that others in your area who want to adopt will know that this kitten is available?
