Happy December 1, and welcome to the first day of the 2017 Virtual Advent Tour!
Today’s host is me!
Part of my holiday tradition these days involves going out on Small Business Saturday (the Saturday after Thanksgiving) to support local businesses wherever I am.
This year, my best friend, Karen, and I were in Putnam, Connecticut, that afternoon, where we discovered the town’s businesses had put together gingerbread houses/structures/engineering marvels. They all smelled wonderfully of ginger and clove and sugar and looked delicious, and some of them were remarkably creative:
(Created by a realtor)
(I really liked the Oreo grand piano in this one.)
(Someone clearly put a lot of work into this one.)
(This one was at the local bike shop.)
(My photography skills left something to be desired here.)
(This one is my favorite, but again, my camera and I weren’t up to combating the glare. Located in the window of the local comic book and record shop, this Transformer is at least two feet fall. Seriously impressive engineering here, even if there had been a mishap at some point.)
That’s it for today. Below you can find the schedule for the rest of the month as I have it thus far. (I have a couple emails out to a few other people right now.) If you’d like to join us by posting a holiday-themed blog post, we’d be delighted to have you. Just leave a comment to let me know you’d like to participate! Also, if you are participating, feel free to grab the badge at the top of this post. (It’s 400 px wide. I also uploaded a 200px one. Let me know if you want something in a different size.)
And be sure to stop back tomorrow for a new and wonderful Advent door to open!

I would love to have one another day! Even Christmas Eve would be OK with me, but feel free to assign one or two additional if you need them. 🙂
Comment by Bridget 12.01.17 @ 10:04 amLike Bridget, I could take another day (or two) if you need to fill out the schedule.
Comment by Nancy 12.01.17 @ 10:13 amI love those gingerbread houses! And, I love this tradition you do!
Comment by AsKatKnits 12.01.17 @ 10:19 amThese pictures came out great. I like the ice cream cones as Christmas trees. I may steal some of these ideas if I get around to making gingerbread (or graham cracker) houses with the kids this year.
Comment by Karen 12.01.17 @ 9:51 pmOh wow those are some crazy gingerbread houses. I never had much patients to do those.
Comment by Tobia | craftaliciousme 12.02.17 @ 4:10 amGreat Gingerbread fun !!! Wow. I love the velodrome the best!
Comment by kathy b 12.02.17 @ 11:18 pmAmazing gingerbread houses! (think of those glare photos as subtle selfies!)
I’m working on my post for the 6th and will try to have it up by midnight. I’m also planning to do a Christmas thing with my classes, so I’ll plan another post (if it works) about our project, sometime between 17th and 22nd to fill in one of the gaps.
Comment by raidergirl3 12.04.17 @ 9:45 pm@raidergirl3: Ha! It’s true! And I’d love to have you fill in a gap should your project work out! We still have a couple openings during that time.
Comment by soe 12.06.17 @ 5:50 am@kathy b: The velodrome is Rudi’s favorite, too.
Comment by soe 12.06.17 @ 5:51 am@Jo Kay: So much time and work clearly went into them!
@Tobia: I’ve never made a gingerbread house, partially for that reason.
@Karen: I think the businesses of Putnam would appreciate your co-opting their ideas.
Comment by soe 12.06.17 @ 5:53 am@Kat: Thank you!
@Nancy: Thanks! I’ll drop you a line if I don’t hear from the last few folks I hope to hear back from.
@Bridget: Thank you! It’s yours!
